Process & Philosophy
“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

— Michelangelo

Richard Trujillo sees art just like that. Working from his studio in the Arizona desert, his creative process is deeply organic and exploratory. He keeps working until the painting or turned wood reveals what it wants to be.

Richard Trujillo

Richard is a fine art painter specializing in oils and acrylics and a master craftsman turning fine art sculptural wood on the lathe. His practice honors natural materials, allowing the unique characteristics of pigment and timber to guide every piece.

The Dialogue

Three Mediums

In his painting studio, Richard works extensively with oils and acrylics, layering bold colors and building rich surfaces that capture the stark, dynamic light of the Arizona desert. Rather than enforcing a rigid sketch, he listens to how the colors interact on the canvas.

Simultaneously, his fine art lathe practice uncovers the hidden natural geometry inside salvaged hardwoods and burls. Spinning timber on the lathe, Trujillo carves precise hollow forms and vessels that celebrate organic grain irregularities, knots, and live edges.

Whether applying oil and acrylic layers or carving wood burls, his commitment remains constant: honoring the organic reveal of the artwork.
